Google is warning victims in Kazakhstan and Italy that they are being targeted by Hermit, a sophisticated and modular spyware from Italian vendor RCS Labs that not only can steal data but also record and make calls.

Researchers from Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG) revealed details in a blog post Thursday by TAG researchers Benoit Sevens and Clement Lecigne about campaigns that send a unique link to targets to fake apps impersonating legitimate ones to try to get them to download and install the spyware. None of the fake apps were found on either Apple’s or Google’s respective mobile app stores, however, they said.

TAG is attributing the capabilities to notorious surveillance software vendor RCS Labs, which previously was linked to spyware activity employed by an agent of the Kazakhstan government against domestic targets, and identified by Lookout research.

“We are detailing capabilities we attribute to RCS Labs, an Italian vendor that uses a combination of tactics, including atypical drive-by downloads as initial infection vectors, to target mobile users on both iOS and Android,” a Google TAG spokesperson wrote in an email to Threatpost sent Thursday afternoon.

All campaigns that TAG observed originated with a unique link sent to the target that then tries to lure users into downloading Hermit spyware in one of two ways, researchers wrote in the post. Once clicked, victims are redirected to a web page for downloading and installing a surveillance app on either Android or iOS.

“The page, in Italian, asks the user to install one of these applications in order to recover their account,” with WhatsApp download links specifically pointing to attacker-controlled content for Android or iOS users, researchers wrote.

****Collaborating with ISPs****

One lure employed by threat actors is to work with the target’s ISP to disable his or her mobile data connectivity, and then masquerade as a carrier application sent in a link to try to get the target to install a malicious app to recover connectivity, they said.

Researchers outlined in a separate blog post by Ian Beer of Google Project Zero a case in which they discovered what appeared to be an iOS app from Vodafone but which in fact is a fake app. Attackers are sending a link to this malicious app by SMS to try to fool targets into downloading the Hermit spyware.

“The SMS claims that in order to restore mobile data connectivity, the target must install the carrier app and includes a link to download and install this fake app,” Beer wrote.

Indeed, this is likely the reason why most of the applications they observed in the Hermit campaign masqueraded as mobile carrier applications, Google TAG researchers wrote.

In other cases when they can’t work directly with ISPs, threat actors use apps appearing to be messaging applications to hide Hermit, according to Google TAG, confirming what Lookout previously discovered in its research.

****iOS Campaign Revealed****

While Lookout previously shared details of how Hermit targeting Android devices works, Google TAG revealed specifics of how the spyware functions on iPhones.

They also released details of the host of vulnerabilities—two of which were zero-day bugs when they were initially identified by Google Project Zero—that attackers exploit in their campaign. In fact, Beer’s post is a technical analysis of one of the bugs: CVE-2021-30983 internally referred to as Clicked3 and fixed by Apple in December 2021.

To distribute the iOS application, attackers simply followed Apple instructions on how to distribute proprietary in-house apps to Apple devices and used the itms-services protocol with a manifest file with com.ios.Carrier as the identifier, researchers outlined.

The resulting app is signed with a certificate from a company named 3-1 Mobile SRL that was enrolled in the Apple Developer Enterprise Program, thus legitimizing the certificate on iOS devices, they said.

The iOS app itself is broken up into multiple parts, researchers said, including a generic privilege escalation exploit wrapper which is used by six different exploits for previously identified bugs. In addition to Clieked3, the other bugs exploited are:

*   CVE-2018-4344 internally referred to and publicly known as LightSpeed;
*   CVE-2019-8605 internally referred to as SockPort2 and publicly known as SockPuppet;
*   CVE-2020-3837 internally referred to and publicly known as TimeWaste;
*   CVE-2020-9907 internally referred to as AveCesare; and
*   CVE-2021-30883 internally referred to as Clicked2, marked as being exploited in-the-wild by Apple in October 2021.

All exploits used before 2021 are based on public exploits written by different jailbreaking communities, researchers added.

****Broader Implications****

The emergence of Hermit spyware shows how threat actors—often working as state-sponsored entities—are pivoting to using new surveillance technologies and tactics following the blow-up over repressive regimes’ use of Israel-based NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware in cyberattacks against dissidents, activists and NGOs, as well as the murders of journalists.

Indeed, while use of spyware like Hermit may be legal under national or international laws, “they are often found to be used by governments for purposes antithetical to democratic values: targeting dissidents, journalists, human rights workers and opposition party politicians,” Google TAG researchers wrote.

The United States blacklisted NSO Group over the activity, which drew international attention and ire. But it apparently has not stopped the proliferation of spyware for nefarious purposes in the slightest, according to Google TAG.

In fact, the commercial spyware industry continues to thrive and grow at a significant rate, which “should be concerning to all Internet users,” researchers wrote.

“These vendors are enabling the proliferation of dangerous hacking tools and arming governments that would not be able to develop these capabilities in-house,” they said.

Google Warns Spyware Being Deployed Against Android, iOS Users

The spyware has been used to target people in Italy, Kazakhstan, and Syria, researchers at Google and Lookout have found.

In hearings this week, the notorious spyware vendor NSO group told European legislators that at least five EU countries have used its powerful Pegasus surveillance malware. But as ever more comes to light about the reality of how NSO's products have been abused around the world, researchers are also working to raise awareness that the surveillance-for-hire industry goes far beyond one company. On Thursday, Google's Threat Analysis Group and Project Zero vulnerability analysis team published findings about the iOS version of a spyware product attributed to the Italian developer RCS Labs.

Google researchers say they detected victims of the spyware in Italy and Kazakhstan on both Android and iOS devices. Last week, the security firm Lookout published findings about the Android version of the spyware, which it calls “Hermit” and also attributes to RCS Labs. Lookout notes that Italian officials used a version of the spyware during a 2019 anti-corruption probe. In addition to victims located in Italy and Kazakhstan, Lookout also found data indicating that an unidentified entity used the spyware for targeting in northeastern Syria.

“Google has been tracking the activities of commercial spyware vendors for years, and in that time we have seen the industry rapidly expand from a few vendors to an entire ecosystem,” TAG security engineer Clement Lecigne tells WIRED. “These vendors are enabling the proliferation of dangerous hacking tools, arming governments that would not be able to develop these capabilities in-house. But there is little or no transparency into this industry, that's why it's critical to share information about these vendors and their capabilities.”

TAG says it currently tracks more than 30 spyware makers that offer an array of technical capabilities and levels of sophistication to government-backed clients.

In their analysis of the iOS version, Google researchers found that attackers distributed the iOS spyware using a fake app meant to look like the My Vodafone app from the popular international mobile carrier. In both Android and iOS attacks, attackers may have simply tricked targets into downloading what appeared to be a messaging app by distributing a malicious link for victims to click. But in some particularly dramatic cases of iOS targeting, Google found that attackers may have been working with local ISPs to cut off a specific user's mobile data connection, send them a malicious download link over SMS, and convince them to install the fake My Vodafone app over Wi-Fi with the promise that this would restore their cell service.

Attackers were able to distribute the malicious app because RCS Labs had registered with Apple's Enterprise Developer Program, apparently through a shell company called 3-1 Mobile SRL, to obtain a certificate that allows them to sideload apps without going through Apple's typical AppStore review process.

Apple tells WIRED that all of the known accounts and certificates associated with the spyware campaign have been revoked. 

“Enterprise certificates are meant only for internal use by a company, and are not intended for general app distribution, as they can be used to circumvent App Store and iOS protections,” the company wrote in an October report about sideloading. “Despite the program’s tight controls and limited scale, bad actors have found unauthorized ways of accessing it, for instance by purchasing enterprise certificates on the black market.”

Project Zero member Ian Beer conducted a technical analysis of the exploits used in the RCS Labs iOS malware. He notes that the spyware uses a total of six exploits to gain access to surveil a victim's device. While five are known and publicly circulating exploits for older iOS versions, the sixth was an unknown vulnerability at the time it was discovered. (Apple patched that vulnerability in December.) That exploit took advantage of structural changes in how data flows across Apple's new generations of “coprocessors” as the company, and the industry overall, moves toward the all-in-one “system-on-a-chip” design.

The exploit isn't unprecedented in its sophistication, but Google researchers note that the RCS Labs spyware reflects a broader trend in which the surveillance-for-hire industry combines existing hacking techniques and exploits with more novel elements to gain the upper hand. 

“The commercial surveillance industry benefits from and reuses research from the jailbreaking community. In this case, three out of six of the exploits are from public jailbreak exploits,” TAG member Benoit Sevens says. “We also see other surveillance vendors reusing techniques and infection vectors initially used and discovered by cyber crime groups. And like other attackers, surveillance vendors are not only using sophisticated exploits but are using social engineering attacks to lure their victims in.”

The research shows that while not all actors are as successful or well known as a company like NSO Group, many small and midsize players together in a burgeoning industry are creating real risk for internet users worldwide.

Google Warns of New Spyware Targeting iOS and Android Users

The beleaguered Israeli surveillanceware vendor NSO Group this week admitted to the European Union lawmakers that its Pegasus tool was used by at least five countries in the region.
"We're trying to do the right thing and that's more than other companies working in the industry," Chaim Gelfand, the company's general counsel and chief compliance officer, said, according to a report from Politico.

The beleaguered Israeli surveillanceware vendor NSO Group this week admitted to the European Union lawmakers that its Pegasus tool was used by at least five countries in the region.

"We're trying to do the right thing and that's more than other companies working in the industry," Chaim Gelfand, the company's general counsel and chief compliance officer, said, according to a report from Politico.

Acknowledging that it had "made mistakes," the company also stressed on the need for an international standard to regulate the government use of spyware.

The disclosure comes as a special inquiry committee was launched in April 2022 to investigate alleged breaches of E.U. law following revelations that the company's Pegasus spyware is being used to snoop on phones belonging to politicians, diplomats, and civil society members.

"The committee is going to look into existing national laws regulating surveillance, and whether Pegasus spyware was used for political purposes against, for example, journalists, politicians and lawyers," the European Parliament said in March 2022.

Earlier this February, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) called for a ban on the development and the use of commercial spyware in the region, stating that the technology's "unprecedented level of intrusiveness" could endanger users' right to privacy.

Pegasus, and its other counterparts like FinFisher and Cytrox, are designed to be stealthily installed on a smartphone by exploiting unknown vulnerabilities in software known as zero-days to seize remote control of the device and harvest sensitive data.

Infections are typically achieved by means of one-click attacks wherein targets are tricked into clicking on a link sent via messages on iMessage or WhatsApp, or alternatively using zero-click exploits that require no interaction.

Once installed, the spyware provides support for a broad range of capabilities that allows the operator to track the victim's whereabouts, eavesdrop on conversations, and exfiltrate messages from even encrypted apps like WhatsApp.

NSO Group, founded in 2010, has long maintained it only supplies the software to government customers for what it says is to tackle terrorism, drug trafficking, and serious crime, but evidence has shown widespread misuse of the software to keep tabs on political opponents, critics, activists, journalists, lawyers across the world.

"The use of Pegasus does not require cooperation with telecommunication companies, and it can easily overcome encryption, SSL, proprietary protocols, and any hurdle introduced by the complex communications worldwide," the Council of Europe noted in an interim report.

"It provides remote, covert, and unlimited access to the target's mobile devices. This Modus Operandi of the Pegasus clearly reveals its capacity to be used for targeted as well as indiscriminate surveillance."

Plus: Firefox adds new privacy protections, a big Intel and AMD chip flaw, and more of the week’s top security news.

This week, WIRED revealed new details that link an Indian police force to a hacking campaign against human rights defenders and activists. Researchers at SentinelOne uncovered connections between the city of Pune’s police agency and evidence planted on the devices of activists, as part of a hacking campaign dubbed Modified Elephant. It is alleged that evidence was planted on the computers of activists Rona Wilson and Varvara Rao and then used to arrest the two men. Among other details, an unnamed security analyst at an email provider revealed to SentinelOne and WIRED that the email address and phone number of a Pune police official was set as the recovery email on hacked accounts.

Elsewhere, a new front is emerging in Russia’s war against Ukraine. In the occupied city of Kherson and other nearby regions, Russian forces are routing internet connections from Ukrainian internet service providers to Russian companies. Ukrainian officials tell WIRED the shifts are happening at a large scale and could result in people being subjected to Vladimir Putin’s surveillance and censorship machine.

Robocalls aren’t going away. There’s been progress in tackling the nuisance calls in recent years but the spammy calls are still prevalent. Viktor Muller Ferreira had a traumatic childhood. Growing up, his father and mother—who had adopted him—split up. His mother later died of pneumonia, and his aunt, who raised him, also passed away. The family didn’t have much money. At school, children bullied Ferreira for his looks and his weird accent. As a result, he didn’t have many friends.

One day when his aunt was out, a neighborhood boy came round and told Ferreira that he was the fairy tale character Grey Shadow and he was going to “devour” him. “This scared me so much that I spent the entire day in a small box out on the balcony, praying until my aunt came home.” As he grew older he worked in a garage, took an interest in journalism, and moved to Brazil to reunite with his estranged father and “restore my citizenship.”

Except, according to authorities in the Netherlands, none of that is true.

Dutch intelligence agency AVID claimed this week that “Viktor Muller Ferreira” is just a cover story and false identity for Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, an alleged Russian intelligence officer belonging to the GRU military unit. AVID said it caught Cherkasov applying to be an intern at the International Criminal Court at The Hague, which is investigating potential war crimes in Russia’s wars against Ukraine and Georgia.

As well as stopping Cherkasov from obtaining the position at the ICC and sending him back to Brazil, the Dutch intelligence agency also published his long and detailed cover story. The four-page story, often known as a covert intelligence officer’s “legend,” details the background of the “Ferreira” identity. “The threat posed by this intelligence officer is deemed potentially very high,” AVID said in a statement.

Since outing “Ferreira,” more clues about his undercover life have emerged. Social media profiles belonging to “Ferreira” have been discovered by the investigative unit Bellingcat, as well as a blog and online CV. He also studied at Trinity College Dublin and Johns Hopkins University. Eugene Finkel, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins, who says he taught “Ferreira,” tweeted: “I wrote him a letter. A strong one, in fact. Yes, me. I wrote a reference letter for a GRU officer. I will never get over this fact. I hate everything about GRU, him, this story. I am so glad he was exposed.”

For years it’s been impossible to move backups of WhatsApp chats between Android and iOS, and vice versa. In August last year, WhatsApp announced it was starting to roll out the ability for people to move their data between iPhones and Android devices. Now, this week, the Meta-owned company says backups will work in the other direction too—from Android to iOS.

Processors from Intel and AMD are vulnerable to a new side-channel attack called Hertzbleed. The attack could allow the theft of cryptographic keys and data, as reported by BleepingComputer and DarkReading. Hertzbleed works by exploiting a common power-saving feature in chips—called dynamic frequency scaling (DVFS)—that could allow an attacker to steal data. Frequency changes in DVFS may be correlated with information being processed by chips, Intel says in a blog post. Despite this, neither Intel nor AMD appear to have plans to address the issue. However, the risk to end users seems low at the moment. The team of researchers who found Hertzbleed say ordinary users probably shouldn’t be worried.

Ever since Covid-19 started spreading in early 2020, technological systems have been developed to try to control its spread. In China, a mandatory health code system was created to monitor people’s health status—people with a red code are required to self-isolate, those with a green code are allowed to move freely. These health codes are tied to people’s phones. Now, according to multiple reports, people in the Chinese province of Henan claim their plans to protest have been blocked as their health code has been turned red. Several people impacted claim they have not been around anyone positive with Covid-19 and the change is an abuse of power by officials.

Mozilla’s web browser may have been struggling in recent years, but it is still one of the most privacy-friendly browsers. This week the company said Firefox is turning on its Total Cookie Protection feature by default for everyone using the browser. Any cookies saved to your computer will be available only to the website that placed them there, Mozilla explains in a blog post. “Instead of allowing trackers to link up your behavior on multiple sites, they just get to see behavior on individual sites,” the company says, adding it is “Firefox’s strongest privacy protection to date.”

In November 2021, the US sanctioned notorious Israeli spyware firm NSO Group. The company’s Pegasus hacking tool has been used around the world to spy on journalists and activists. This week it emerged that US defense firm L3Harris is interested in purchasing the technology behind Pegasus, as the _Financial Times_ reports. Any purchase of the technology by a US company would potentially put it at odds with the Biden administration, which blacklisted NSO. Talk of the potential deal, which was said to be in early stages, has prompted criticism from the White House. “We are deeply concerned,” a senior official told the _Washington Post_. They said the deal could cause security and counterintelligence issues for the US.

An enterprise-grade surveillanceware dubbed **Hermit** has been put to use by entities operating from within Kazakhstan, Syria, and Italy over the years since 2019, new research has revealed.

Lookout attributed the spy software, which is equipped to target both Android and iOS, to an Italian company named RCS Lab S.p.A and Tykelab Srl, a telecom services provider which it suspects to be a front company. The San Francisco-based cybersecurity firm said it detected the campaign aimed at Kazakhstan in April 2022.

Hermit is modular and comes with myriad capabilities that allow it to "exploit a rooted device, record audio and make and redirect phone calls, as well as collect data such as call logs, contacts, photos, device location and SMS messages," Lookout researchers Justin Albrecht and Paul Shunk said in a new write-up.

The spyware is believed to be distributed via SMS messages that trick users into installing what are seemingly innocuous apps from Samsung, Vivo, and Oppo, which, when opened, loads a website from the impersonated company while stealthily activating the kill chain in the background.

Like other Android malware threats, Hermit is engineered to abuse its access to accessibility services and other core components of the operating system (i.e., contacts, camera, calendar, clipboard, etc.) for most of its malicious activities.

Android devices have been at the receiving end of spyware in the past. In November 2021, the threat actor tracked as APT-C-23 (aka Arid Viper) was linked to a wave of attacks targeting Middle East users with new variants of FrozenCell.

Then last month, Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) disclosed that at least government-backed actors located in Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Madagascar, Côte d'Ivoire, Serbia, Spain, and Indonesia are buying Android zero-day exploits for covert surveillance campaigns.

"RCS Lab, a known developer that has been active for over three decades, operates in the same market as Pegasus developer NSO Group Technologies and Gamma Group, which created FinFisher," the researchers noted.

"Collectively branded as 'lawful intercept' companies, they claim to only sell to customers with legitimate use for surveillanceware, such as intelligence and law enforcement agencies. In reality, such tools have often been abused under the guise of national security to spy on business executives, human rights activists, journalists, academics and government officials."

The findings come as the Israel-based NSO Group is said to be reportedly in talks to sell off its Pegasus technology to U.S. defense contractor L3Harris, the company that manufactures StingRay cellular phone trackers, prompting concerns that it could open the door for law enforcement's use of the controversial hacking tool.

The German maker behind FinFisher has been courting troubles of its own in the wake of raids conducted by investigating authorities in connection with suspected violations of foreign trading laws by way of selling its spyware in Turkey without obtaining the required license.

Earlier this March, it shut down its operations and filed for insolvency, Netzpolitik and Bloomberg reported, adding, "the office has been dissolved, the employees have been laid off, and business operations have ceased."

Researchers Uncover 'Hermit' Android Spyware Used in Kazakhstan, Syria, and Italy

The commercial-grade surveillance software initially was used by law enforcement authorities in Italy in 2019, according to a new report.

Researchers have discovered an enterprise-grade Android family of modular spyware dubbed Hermit conducting surveillance on citizens of Kazakhstan by their government.

Lookout Threat Lab researchers - who spotted the spyware - surmise that the secretive Italian spyware vendor RCS Lab developed it and say Hermit was previously deployed by Italian authorities in a 2019 anti-corruption operation in Italy. The spyware also was found in northeastern Syria, home to the country's Kurdish majority and a site of ongoing crises, including the Syrian civil war.

Android devices have been abused with spyware in the past; Sophos researchers uncovered new variants of Android spyware linked to a Middle Eastern APT group back in November 2021. More recent analysis from Google TAG indicates at least eight governments from across the globe are buying Android zero-day exploits for covert surveillance purposes.

Mike Parkin, senior technical engineer at Vulcan Cyber, says spyware is a tool used by many actors worldwide, including criminal organizations, state or state-sponsored threat actors, national security, and law-enforcement organizations following their own mandates.

"Regardless of who is using it or what agenda they are working toward, these commercial- grade spyware tools can seriously threaten people's personal privacy," he says.

The highest profile spyware case in recent memory was the discovery of Pegasus, a legal surveillance software developed by Israeli company NSO Group. The news caused an international furor after it was found covertly installed on iOS and Android mobile phones belonging to human rights activists, journalists, and high-ranking members of governments.

**How Hermit Works**

Hermit first gets installed on a targeted device as a framework with minimal surveillance capability. Then it can download modules from a command-and-control (C2) server as instructed and activate the spying functionality built into these modules.

This modular approach masks the malware from automated analysis of the app and makes manual malware analysis significantly harder. In addition, it allows the malicious actor to enable and disable different functionalities in their surveillance campaign or the capabilities of a target device. Hermit can also alter its behavior as needed to evade analysis tools and processes.

"The modular design might also be part of the business model of the software vendor, allowing them to sell individual spying features as value-add line items," explains Paul Shunk, security researcher at Lookout, which published a report on Hermit today.

Shunk says the overall design and code quality of the malware stands out compared with many other samples he has seen. 

"It was clear this was professionally developed by creators with an understanding of software engineering best practices," he says. "Beyond that, it is not very often we come across malware \[that\] assumes it will be able to successfully exploit a device and make use of elevated root permissions."

The discovery of Hermit adds another puzzle piece to the picture of the secretive market for "lawful intercept" surveillance tools, he says.

"As in the cases of NSO, Cytrox, and other vendors, discovery of their customers usually exposes their claim that their product is only used for legitimate purposes as at least partially untrue," Shunk says.

One of the Hermit samples Lookout analyzed used a Kazakh language website as its decoy.

And the main C2 server used by the app was just a proxy, with the real C2 being hosted on an IP from Kazakhstan. 

"The combination of the targeting of Kazakh-speaking users and the location of the back-end C2 server is a strong indication that the campaign is controlled by an entity in Kazakhstan," Shunk says.

Lookout says an Apple iOS version of the spyware exists as well, but the research team was unable to obtain a sample to analyze.

**'MaliBot' Targets Online Banking**

Meanwhile, another Android-based malware family reared its head this week in the form of Malibot, which is targeting online banking customers in Spain and Italy with the capability to steal credentials and crypto wallets. The malware was discovered by F5 Labs while the security company was tracking the mobile banking Trojan FluBot.

The malware consists of two campaigns: Mining X, which presents a QR code that leads to the malware Android Package Kit, and TheCryptoApp, which attempts to dupe users into downloading a fake version of the popular cryptocurrency tracker app available on the Google Play Store. 

It's also able to steal or bypass multifactor authentication codes and trick victims into downloading the malware either via a direct SMS phishing message or via fake websites they're lured to.

"This is certainly one to pay attention to and F5 expects to see a broader range of targets as time goes on, especially given the versatility of the malware could, in principle, be used for a wider range of attacks than stealing credentials and cryptocurrency," F5 warns in a blog post.

I’m still decompressing from Cisco Live and the most human interaction I’ve had in a year and a half.  

But after spending a few days on the show floor and interacting with everyone, there are a few things that stand out to me about the state of security and what people are interested in at Cisco Live. So, I wanted to take some time to highlight a few things that stood out to me at this year’s Cisco Live. _Editor's note: The Threat Source newsletter will be on a summer break next week, so no new edition!_ 

**Don’t think about the worst **

A lot of our lightning talks at the Cisco Secure Pub this week centered around some crazy days, many of which left us scrambling — the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, Log4J, Kaseya, you name it. The problem is no one wants to think about how awful these days are. 

During these talks, I saw a lot of heads in the audience nodding around how we need to be prepared for the worst, but no one wants to talk about that. Who wants to be the one to predict the next Log4J? Unfortunately, it’s going to happen, we just don’t know when. That’s why things like Incident Response plans and playbooks are so important. 

You may not want to talk about the toughest day of your professional career, but it’s going to come, so we may as well embrace it and be ready. 

**A wink and a nod **

Speaking of these major incidents, it seems like a ton of major security events have happened since the last Cisco Live in person. While they were happening, it was all anyone could talk about. But in person, words like “SolarWinds” and “Kaseya” were all spoken in hush tones or were just vaguely referenced to in-person like “back then” or “the dark times.”  

If we are going to truly learn from these events, I feel like we need to speak about them openly and honestly. I try to have a judgment-free security zone because eventually, a breach is going to happen to everyone. So the point is not to shame someone when it happens, we should be discussing the lessons learned openly so we can do better next time, rather than trying to brush it under the rug. 

During these stretches, we were all busy and stressed and it made for some late nights. That’s OK, and it should be OK to talk about that, even if you’re within earshot of someone who was involved.

**We can’t replicate everything over the internet **

The future is hybrid work, there’s no doubt about it. And I’d be the first person to tell you I prefer working from home versus commuting to the office today. But I must admit — it’s tough to replicate the connections at conferences and shows over Webex. 

Meetings and 1:1 check-ins work great for virtual meeting platforms, but there’s something about just making a personal connection in-person to a stranger. I was working at the Talos booth this week and struck up a conversation with someone who worked in network operations for an NFL team. Being a huge NFL fan, I had all sorts of questions to ask about the ins and outs of his job and the organization, especially given Cisco Talos Incident Response’s recent work at the Super Bowl and NFL draft. 

Unfortunately, this isn’t something we’ve been able to capture virtually. That operations person and I exchanged information on what we’re seeing in the field, what pain points exist and even got to talking about the NFL offseason. My wife, boss and parents would be shocked to hear me say this — but I actually missed talking to people in person.    

**The one big thing **

Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday for this month included 40 high-severity vulnerabilities, including one critical issue. The most serious issue is CVE-2022-30136, a remote code execution vulnerability in the Windows Network File System (NFS) service, version NFSv4.1, with a severity score of near-maximum 9.8. An attacker can exploit the vulnerability over the network by making an unauthenticated, specially crafted call to an NFS service to execute remote code. To mitigate this vulnerability, users are advised to disable the vulnerable version NFSV4.1 and restart the NFS server or reboot the machine. 

> **Why do I care? **This month’s round of updates also includes a fix for the high-profile Follina vulnerability disclosed a few weeks ago. Attackers are actively exploiting this in the wild to deliver malware, so this is especially important to patch for immediately. Also, this release marks the official end of Internet Explorer, the Microsoft browser that’s been around for more than 25 years. As of Tuesday, Microsoft stopped officially supporting most versions of Explorer and disabled the IE desktop application. All Explorer users are encouraged to switch over to Microsoft Edge (or another web browser).   
> **So now what? **Talos is releasing a new Snort rule set that detects attempts to exploit some of them. Cisco Secure Firewall customers should use the latest update to their ruleset by updating their SRU. Open-source Snort Subscriber Rule Set customers can stay up to date by downloading the latest rule pack available for purchase on Snort.org. And it goes without saying, but all Microsoft users should update their products as soon as possible. 

**Other news of note**

U.S. defense contractor L3Harris is in talks to acquire the controversial Israeli tech company NSO Group, the creators of the Pegasus spyware. Pegasus is known to be used by threat actors to track unwilling targets, including activists, journalists and government leaders. This has set off alarm bells for privacy experts and those following national security, and some are even calling on the White House to preemptively block any sort of deal. NSO Group is currently on a U.S. blacklist for working “contrary to the foreign policy and national security interests of the U.S.” (The Guardian, Haaretz) 

Apple unveiled the newest version of its iOS operating system for iPhones last week, including several new security features and improvements. Users will no longer have to download standalone versions of the operating system to implement security updates, and instead, the patches will be installed automatically. Another new feature is the ability to edit and unsend iMessages. However, security and privacy experts worry this ability could allow stalkers, harassers, and abusers to contact their victims and then hide any trace of their messages, leading some people to call on Apple to change the feature. (9To5Mac, Mac Rumors) 

A newly discovered Linux malware is extremely difficult to detect while spreading silently across a network. Security researchers call this campaign “Symbiote,” and it's already been spotted in the wild. Symbiote infects running Linux processes and steals user credentials, gains rootkit functionality and installs a backdoor for remote access. Once it infects the processes, it can become difficult to detect by the typical security software, and some researchers are wondering if it’s even possible to detect this attack. (ThreatPost, Ars Technica)
