Microsoft Releases Patch for Two New Actively Exploited Zero-Days Flaws

Microsoft has released software fixes to remediate 59 bugs spanning its product portfolio, including two zero-day flaws that have been actively exploited by malicious cyber actors. Of the 59 vulnerabilities, five are rated Critical, 55 are rated Important, and one is rated Moderate in severity. Ubuntu Security Notice 6164-2 - USN-6164-1 fixed several vulnerabilities in c-ares. This update provides the corresponding update for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Hannes Moesl discovered that c-ares incorrectly handled certain ipv6 addresses. An attacker could use this issue to cause c-ares to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code.

A physically proximate attacker could use this to cause a denial of service.

If a user or an automated system were tricked into receiving crafted inputs, an attacker could possibly use this to falsify the domain of an e-mails origin. Patrik Lantz discovered that OpenDMARC incorrectly handled certain inputs. If a user or an automated system were tricked into opening a specially crafted input file, a remote attacker could possibly use this issue to cause a denial of service.

A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code. It was discovered that a race condition existed in the f2fs file system in the Linux kernel, leading to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. An attacker could use this to construct a malicious f2fs image that, when mounted and operated on, could cause a denial of service.
