Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6080-1

Ubuntu Security Notice 6080-1 - It was discovered that some AMD x86-64 processors with SMT enabled could speculatively execute instructions using a return address from a sibling thread. A local attacker could possibly use this to expose sensitive information. Zheng Wang discovered that the Intel i915 graphics driver in the Linux kernel did not properly handle certain error conditions, leading to a double-free. A local attacker could possibly use this to cause a denial of service.

Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6079-1

Ubuntu Security Notice 6079-1 - It was discovered that some AMD x86-64 processors with SMT enabled could speculatively execute instructions using a return address from a sibling thread. A local attacker could possibly use this to expose sensitive information. Ziming Zhang discovered that the VMware Virtual GPU DRM driver in the Linux kernel contained an out-of-bounds write vulnerability. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service.

China's Mustang Panda Hackers Exploit TP-Link Routers for Persistent Attacks

The Chinese nation-state actor known as Mustang Panda has been linked to a new set of sophisticated and targeted attacks aimed at European foreign affairs entities since January 2023. An analysis of these intrusions, per Check Point researchers Itay Cohen and Radoslaw Madej, has revealed a custom firmware implant designed explicitly for TP-Link routers. "The implant features several malicious

'MichaelKors' Showcases Ransomware's Fashionable VMware ESXi Hypervisor Trend

Wide use and lack of support for malware detection technologies has made VMware's virtualization technology a prime target for cyberattackers.

CVE-2023-2548: RegistrationMagic <= 5.2.0.5 - Authenticated (Admin+) Insecure Direct Object Reference to Arbitrary User Password Change — Wordfence Intelligence

The RegistrationMagic plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Insecure Direct Object References in versions up to, and including, 5.2.0.5. This is due to the plugin providing user-controlled access to objects, letting a user bypass authorization and access system resources. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level permissions and above, to change user passwords and potentially take over super-administrator accounts in multisite setup.

Hackers Using Golang Variant of Cobalt Strike to Target Apple macOS Systems

A Golang implementation of Cobalt Strike called Geacon is likely to garner the attention of threat actors looking to target Apple macOS systems. The findings come from SentinelOne, which observed an uptick in the number of Geacon payloads appearing on VirusTotal in recent months. "While some of these are likely red-team operations, others bear the characteristics of genuine malicious attacks,"

Confidential computing use cases

This article is the third in a six-part series (see our previous blog), where we present various usage models for confidential computing, a set of technologies designed to protect data in use—for example using memory encryption—and the requirements to get the expected security and trust benefits from the technology. In this third article, we consider the four most important use cases for confidential computing: confidential virtual machines, confidential workloads, confidential containers and confidential clusters. This will allow us to better understand the trade-offs between the

Break the DDoS Attack Loop With Rate Limiting

This Tech Tip demonstrates how security engineers can best use rate limits to mitigate distributed denial-of-service attacks.
