**President Trump** last week issued a flurry of executive orders that upended a number of government initiatives focused on improving the nation’s cybersecurity posture. The president fired all advisors from the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Safety Review Board, called for the creation of a strategic cryptocurrency reserve, and voided a Biden administration action that sought to reduce the risks that artificial intelligence poses to consumers, workers and national security.

On his first full day back in the White House, Trump dismissed all 15 advisory committee members of the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB), a nonpartisan government entity established in February 2022 with a mandate to investigate the causes of major cybersecurity events. The CSRB has so far produced three detailed reports, including an analysis of the Log4Shell vulnerability crisis, attacks from the cybercrime group LAPSUS$, and the 2023 Microsoft Exchange Online breach.

The CSRB was in the midst of an inquiry into cyber intrusions uncovered recently across a broad spectrum of U.S. telecommunications providers at the hands of Chinese state-sponsored hackers. One of the CSRB’s most recognizable names is **Chris Krebs** (no relation), the former director of the **Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency** (CISA). Krebs was fired by President Trump in November 2020 for declaring the presidential contest was the most secure in American history, and for refuting Trump’s false claims of election fraud.

South Dakota Governor **Kristi Noem**, confirmed by the U.S. Senate last week as the new director of the DHS, criticized CISA at her confirmation hearing, _TheRecord_ reports.

Noem told lawmakers CISA needs to be “much more effective, smaller, more nimble, to really fulfill their mission,” which she said should be focused on hardening federal IT systems and hunting for digital intruders. Noem said the agency’s work on fighting misinformation shows it has “gotten far off mission” and involved “using their resources in ways that was never intended.”

“The misinformation and disinformation that they have stuck their toe into and meddled with, should be refocused back onto what their job is,” she said.

**Moses Frost**, a cybersecurity instructor with the SANS Institute, compared the sacking of the CSRB members to firing all of the experts at the **National Transportation Safety Board** (NTSB) while they’re in the middle of an investigation into a string of airline disasters.

“I don’t recall seeing an ‘NTSB Board’ being fired during the middle of a plane crash investigation,” Frost said in a recent SANS newsletter. “I can say that the attackers in the phone companies will not stop because the review board has gone away. We do need to figure out how these attacks occurred, and CISA did appear to be doing some good for the vast majority of the federal systems.”

Speaking of transportation, _The Record_ notes that Transportation Security Administration chief **David Pekoske** was fired despite overseeing critical cybersecurity improvements across pipeline, rail and aviation sectors. Pekoske was appointed by Trump in 2017 and had his 5-year tenure renewed in 2022 by former President Joe Biden.

**AI & CRYPTOCURRENCY**

Shortly after being sworn in for a second time, Trump voided a Biden executive order that focused on supporting research and development in artificial intelligence. The previous administration’s order on AI was crafted with an eye toward managing the safety and security risks introduced by the technology. But a statement released by the White House said Biden’s approach to AI had hindered development, and that the United States would support AI systems that are “free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas,” to maintain leadership.

The Trump administration issued its own executive order on AI, which calls for an “AI Action Plan” to be led by the assistant to the president for science and technology, the White House “AI & crypto czar,” and the national security advisor. It also directs the White House to revise and reissue policies to federal agencies on the government’s acquisition and governance of AI “to ensure that harmful barriers to America’s AI leadership are eliminated.”

Trump’s AI & crypto czar is **David Sacks**, an entrepreneur and Silicon Valley venture capitalist who argues that the Biden administration’s approach to AI and cryptocurrency has driven innovation overseas. Sacks recently asserted that non-fungible cryptocurrency tokens and memecoins are neither securities nor commodities, but rather should be treated as “collectibles” like baseball cards and stamps.

There is already a legal definition of collectibles under the U.S. tax code that applies to things like art or antiques, which can be subject to high capital gains taxes. But **Joe Hall**, a capital markets attorney and partner at Davis Polk, told _Fortune_ there are no market regulations that apply to collectibles under U.S. securities law. Hall said Sacks’ comments “suggest a viewpoint that it would not be appropriate to regulate these things the way we regulate securities.”

The new administration’s position makes sense considering that the Trump family is deeply and personally invested in a number of recent memecoin ventures that have attracted billions from investors. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump each launched their own vanity memecoins this month, dubbed **$TRUMP** and **$MELANIA**.

_The Wall Street Journal_ reported Thursday the market capitalization of $TRUMP stood at about $7 billion, down from a peak of near $15 billion, while $MELANIA is hovering somewhere in the $460 million mark. Just two months before the 2024 election, Trump’s three sons debuted a cryptocurrency token called **World Liberty Financial**.

Despite maintaining a considerable personal stake in how cryptocurrency is regulated, Trump issued an executive order on January 23 calling for a working group to be chaired by Sacks that would develop “a federal regulatory framework governing digital assets, including stablecoins,” and evaluate the creation of a “strategic national digital assets stockpile.”

Translation: Using taxpayer dollars to prop up the speculative, volatile, and highly risky cryptocurrency industry, which has been marked by endless scams, rug-pulls, 8-figure cyber heists, rampant fraud, and unrestrained innovations in money laundering.

**WEAPONIZATION & DISINFORMATION**

Prior to the election, President Trump frequently vowed to use a second term to exact retribution against his perceived enemies. Part of that promise materialized in an executive order Trump issued last week titled “Ending the Weaponization of the Federal Government,” which decried “an unprecedented, third-world weaponization of prosecutorial power to upend the democratic process,” in the prosecution of more than 1,500 people who invaded the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

On Jan. 21, Trump commuted the sentences of several leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who were convicted of seditious conspiracy. He also issued “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021,” which include those who assaulted law enforcement officers.

The New York Times reports “the language of the document suggests — but does not explicitly state — that the Trump administration review will examine the actions of local district attorneys or state officials, such as the district attorneys in Manhattan or Fulton County, Ga., or the New York attorney general, all of whom filed cases against President Trump.”

Another Trump order called “Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship” asserts:

“Over the last 4 years, the previous administration trampled free speech rights by censoring Americans’ speech on online platforms, often by exerting substantial coercive pressure on third parties, such as social media companies, to moderate, deplatform, or otherwise suppress speech that the Federal Government did not approve,” the Trump administration alleged. “Under the guise of combatting ‘misinformation,’ ‘disinformation,’ and ‘malinformation,’ the Federal Government infringed on the constitutionally protected speech rights of American citizens across the United States in a manner that advanced the Government’s preferred narrative about significant matters of public debate.”

Both of these executive orders have potential implications for security, privacy and civil liberties activists who have sought to track conspiracy theories and raise awareness about disinformation efforts on social media coming from U.S. adversaries.

In the wake of the 2020 election, Republicans created the **House Judiciary Committee’s Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government**. Led by GOP **Rep. Jim Jordan** of Ohio, the committee’s stated purpose was to investigate alleged collusion between the Biden administration and tech companies to unconstitutionally shut down political speech.

The GOP committee focused much of its ire at members of the short-lived Disinformation Governance Board, an advisory board to DHS created in 2022 (the “combating misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation” quote from Trump’s executive order is a reference to the board’s stated mission). Conservative groups seized on social media posts made by the director of the board, who resigned after facing death threats. The board was dissolved by DHS soon after.

In his first administration, President Trump created a special prosecutor to probe the origins of the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives seeking to influence the 2016 election. Part of that inquiry examined evidence gathered by some of the world’s most renowned cybersecurity experts who identified frequent and unexplained communications between an email server used by the **Trump Organization** and **Alfa Bank**, one of Russia’s largest financial institutions.

Trump’s Special Prosecutor **John Durham** later subpoenaed and/or deposed dozens of security experts who’d collected, viewed or merely commented on the data. Similar harassment and deposition demands would come from lawyers for Alfa Bank. Durham ultimately indicted **Michael Sussman**, the former federal cybercrime prosecutor who reported the oddity to the FBI. Sussman was acquitted in May 2022. Last week, Trump appointed Durham to lead the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, NY.

**Quinta Jurecic** at _Lawfare_ notes that while the executive actions are ominous, they are also vague, and could conceivably generate either a campaign of retaliation, or nothing at all.

“The two orders establish that there will be investigations but leave open the questions of what kind of investigations, what will be investigated, how long this will take, and what the consequences might be,” Jurecic wrote. “It is difficult to draw firm conclusions as to what to expect. Whether this ambiguity is intentional or the result of sloppiness or disagreement within Trump’s team, it has at least one immediate advantage as far as the president is concerned: generating fear among the broad universe of potential subjects of those investigations.”

On Friday, Trump moved to fire at least 17 inspectors general, the government watchdogs who conduct audits and investigations of executive branch actions, and who often uncover instances of government waste, fraud and abuse. Lawfare’s **Jack Goldsmith** argues that the removals are probably legal even though Trump defied a 2022 law that required congressional notice of the terminations, which Trump did not give.

“Trump probably acted lawfully, I think, because the notice requirement is probably unconstitutional,” Goldsmith wrote. “The real bite in the 2022 law, however, comes in the limitations it places on Trump’s power _to replace_ the terminated IGs—limitations that I believe are constitutional. This aspect of the law will make it hard, but not impossible, for Trump to put loyalists atop the dozens of vacant IG offices around the executive branch. The ultimate fate of IG independence during Trump 2.0, however, depends less on legal protections than on whether Congress, which traditionally protects IGs, stands up for them now. Don’t hold your breath.”

Among the many Biden administration executive orders revoked by President Trump last week was an action from December 2021 establishing the **United States Council on Transnational Organized Crime**, which is charged with advising the White House on a range of criminal activities, including drug and weapons trafficking, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, cybercrime, intellectual property theft, money laundering, wildlife and timber trafficking, illegal fishing, and illegal mining.

So far, the White House doesn’t appear to have revoked an executive order that former President Biden issued less than a week before President Trump took office. On Jan. 16, 2025, Biden released a directive that focused on improving the security of federal agencies and contractors, and giving the government more power to sanction the hackers who target critical infrastructure.

A Tumultuous Week for Federal Cybersecurity Efforts

Subaru STARLINK flaw exposed a critical security vulnerability, enabling unauthorized access to vehicle tracking, remote control, and sensitive customer data.

A vulnerability was recently discovered by cybersecurity researchers Shubham Shah and Sam Curry in Subaru’s STARLINK-connected vehicle system, enabling them to remotely start, stop, and track vehicles. The vulnerability in Subaru’s Starlink in-vehicle service, allowed attackers to remotely control and track connected vehicles. 

The vulnerability, an arbitrary account takeover flaw in the Starlink admin portal, enabled the duo to compromise a Subaru employee account. This flaw could let them target vehicles and customer accounts across the United States, Canada, and Japan.

Exploiting this flaw, Curry and Shah could gain unauthorized access to sensitive customer and vehicle data, and even remotely control targeted vehicles. According to a blog post published by researchers, the issue originated from a flaw in the Subaru STARLINK admin portal, a system intended for employee use.

This portal had a critical vulnerability that allowed attackers to reset employee passwords without requiring any confirmation. This meant that by simply knowing an employee’s email address, an attacker could gain access to their account.

Researchers further bypassed two-factor authentication (2FA) by manipulating the website’s code, effectively disabling the security measure. With unauthorized access to the admin portal, the researchers demonstrated the ability to, start, stop, lock, and unlock any Subaru vehicle, and access a year’s worth of detailed location history for any vehicle, including stops and engine starts, providing precise locations with updates every time the engine started. 

Furthermore, they could retrieve the personal information of any customer, including contact details, addresses, billing information (partially masked), and vehicle PINs. They could also add themselves as authorized users to other vehicles, effectively taking control of them without the owner’s knowledge.

Researchers reported this vulnerability to Subaru on November 20, 2024, and the company in response promptly addressed the issue, patching it within 24 hours. The findings were publicly disclosed on January 23, 2025.

****Previous Hacks by the Duo****

Sam Curry and Shubham Shah are well-known for their creative and innovative methods of uncovering security vulnerabilities and responsibly disclosing them to companies.

One of their notable discoveries involved exploiting vulnerabilities in the globally used Points.com loyalty system. This flaw allowed unauthorized access to sensitive user data, including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and transaction details.

In December 2022, Sam Curry identified a critical app flaw that compromised Honda and Nissan vehicles through their VINs. Attackers could exploit this vulnerability to unlock doors, honk horns, and flashlights, and even start the vehicle remotely.

Spectral Capital Files Quantum Cybersecurity Patent

Amid ongoing fears over TikTok, Chinese generative AI platform DeepSeek says it’s sending heaps of US user data straight to its home country, potentially setting the stage for greater scrutiny.

The United States’ recent regulatory action against the Chinese-owned social video platform TikTok prompted mass migration to another Chinese app, the social platform “Rednote.” Now, a generative artificial intelligence platform from the Chinese developer DeepSeek is exploding in popularity, posing a potential threat to US AI dominance and offering the latest evidence that moratoriums like the TikTok ban will not stop Americans from using Chinese-owned digital services.

DeepSeek, an AI research lab created by a prominent Chinese hedge fund, recently gained popularity after releasing its latest open source generative AI model that easily competes with top US platforms like those developed by OpenAI. However, to help avoid US sanctions on hardware and software, DeepSeek created some clever workarounds when building its models. On Monday, DeepSeek’s creators limited new sign-ups after claiming the app had been overrun with a “large-scale malicious attack.”

While DeepSeek has several AI models, some of which can be downloaded and run locally on your laptop, the majority of people will likely access the service through its iOS or Android apps or its web chat interface. Like with other generative AI models, you can ask it questions and get answers; it can search the web; or it can alternatively use a reasoning model to elaborate on answers.

DeepSeek, which does not appear to have established a communications department or press contact yet, did not return a request for comment from WIRED about its user data protections and the extent to which it prioritizes data privacy initiatives.

As people clamor to test out the AI platform, though, the demand brings into focus how the Chinese startup collects user data and sends it home. Users have already reported several examples of DeepSeek censoring content that is critical of China or its policies. The AI setup appears to collect a lot of information—including all your chat messages—and send it back to China. In many ways, it’s likely sending more data back to China than TikTok has in recent years, since the social media company moved to US cloud hosting to try to deflect US security concerns

“It shouldn’t take a panic over Chinese AI to remind people that most companies in the business set the terms for how they use your private data” says John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. “And that when you use their services, you’re doing work for them, not the other way around.”

**What DeepSeek Collects About You**

To be clear, DeepSeek is sending your data to China. The English-language DeepSeek privacy policy, which lays out how the company handles user data, is unequivocal: “We store the information we collect in secure servers located in the People's Republic of China.”

In other words, all the conversations and questions you send to DeepSeek, along with the answers that it generates, are being sent to China or can be. DeepSeek’s privacy policies also outline the information it collects about you, which falls into three sweeping categories: information that you share with DeepSeek, information that it automatically collects, and information that it can get from other sources.

The first of these areas includes “user input,” a broad category likely to cover your chats with DeepSeek via its app or website. “We may collect your text or audio input, prompt, uploaded files, feedback, chat history, or other content that you provide to our model and Services,” the privacy policy states. Within DeepSeek’s settings, it is possible to delete your chat history. On mobile, go to the left-hand navigation bar, tap your account name at the bottom of the menu to open settings, and then click “Delete all chats.”

This collection is similar to that of other generative AI platforms that take in user prompts to answer questions. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for example, has been criticized for its data collection although the company has increased the ways data can be deleted over time. Regardless of these types of protections, privacy advocates emphasize that you should not disclose any sensitive or personal information to AI chat bots.

“I would not input personal or private data in any such an AI assistant,” says Lukasz Olejnik, independent researcher and consultant, affiliated with King's College London Institute for AI. Olejnik notes, though, that if you install models like DeepSeek’s locally and run them on your computer, you can interact with them privately without your data going to the company that made them. Additionally, AI search company Perplexity says it has added DeepSeek to its platforms but claims it is hosting the model in US and EU data centers.

Other personal information that goes to DeepSeek includes data that you use to set up your account, including your email address, phone number, date of birth, username, and more. Likewise, if you get in touch with the company, you’ll be sharing information with it.

Bart Willemsen, a VP analyst focusing on international privacy at Gartner, says that, generally, the construction and operations of generative AI models is not transparent to consumers and other groups. People don’t know exactly how they work or the exact data they have been built upon. For individuals, DeepSeek is largely free, although it has costs for developers using its APIs. “So what do we pay with? What do we usually pay with: data, knowledge, content, information,” Willemsen says.

As with all digital platforms—from websites to apps—there can also be a large amount of data that is collected automatically and silently when you use the services. DeepSeek says it will collect information about what device you are using, your operating system, IP address, and information such as crash reports. It can also record your “keystroke patterns or rhythms,” a type of data more widely collected in software built for character-based languages. Additionally, if you purchase DeepSeek’s premium services, the platform will collect that information. It also uses cookies and other tracking technology to “measure and analyze how you use our services.”

A WIRED review of the DeepSeek website's underlying activity shows the company also appears to send data to Baidu Tongji, Chinese tech giant Baidu's popular web analytics tool, as well as Volces, a Chinese cloud infrastructure firm. In a social media post, Sean O'Brien, founder of Yale Law School's Privacy Lab, said that DeepSeek is also sending “basic” network data and “device profile” to TikTok owner ByteDance “and its intermediaries.

The final category of information DeepSeek reserves the right to collect is data from other sources. If you create a DeepSeek account using Google or Apple sign-on, for instance, it will receive some information from those companies. Advertisers also share information with DeepSeek, its policies say, and this can include “mobile identifiers for advertising, hashed email addresses and phone numbers, and cookie identifiers, which we use to help match you and your actions outside of the service.”

**How DeepSeek Uses Information**

Huge volumes of data may flow to China from DeepSeek’s international user base, but the company still has power over how it uses the information. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says the company will use data in many typical ways, including keeping its service running, enforcing its terms and conditions, and making improvements.

Crucially, though, the company’s privacy policy suggests that it may harness user prompts in developing new models. The company will “review, improve, and develop the service, including by monitoring interactions and usage across your devices, analyzing how people are using it, and by training and improving our technology,” its policies say.

DeepSeek’s privacy policy also says the company will also use information to “comply with \[its\] legal obligations”—a blanket clause many companies include in their policies. DeepSeek’s privacy policy says data can be accessed by its “corporate group,” and it will share information with law enforcement agencies, public authorities, and more when it is required to do so.

While all companies have legal obligations, those based in China do have notable responsibilities. Over the past decade, Chinese officials have passed a series of cybersecurity and privacy laws meant to allow state officials to demand data from tech companies. One 2017 law, for instance, says that organizations and citizens should “cooperate with national intelligence efforts.”

These laws, alongside growing trade tensions between the US and China and other geopolitical factors, fueled security fears about TikTok. The app could harvest huge amounts of data and send it back to China, those in favor of the TikTok ban argued, and the app could also be used to push Chinese propaganda. (TikTok has denied sending US user data to China’s government.) Meanwhile, several DeepSeek users have already pointed out that the platform does not provide answers for questions about the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, and it answers some questions in ways that sound like propaganda.

Willemsen says that, compared to users on a social media platform like TikTok, people messaging with a generative AI system are more actively engaged and the content can feel more personal. In short, any influence could be larger. “Risks of subliminal content alteration, conversation direction steering, in active engagement ought by that logic to lead to more concern, not less,” he says, “especially given how the inner workings of the model are widely unknown, its thresholds, borders, controls, censorship rules, and intent/personae largely left unscrutinized, and it being already so popular in its infancy stage.”

Olejnik, of King's College London, says that while the TikTok ban was a specific situation, US law makers or those in other countries could act again on a similar premise. “We can’t rule out that 2025 will bring an expansion: direct action against AI firms,” Olejnik says. “Of course, data collection may again be named as the reason.”

In 2025, chief information security officers (CISOs) will be directing their attention to becoming more cyber prepared in the event of an attack, by enhancing their crisis simulation capabilities.

That's according to a study conducted by researchers at Hack The Box, which found that out of 200 US- and UK-based CISOs, 74% said they plan to up their crisis simulation budgets this year.

These changes likely stem from rising concerns about the growing number of cyberattacks, the lack of incident-response planning, and inadequate stress-testing of crisis scenarios. Major cyberattacks and cyber incidents have impacted organizations such as NHS, 23andMe, and a host of businesses impacted by the CrowdStrike faulty update in 2024, affecting enterprises on a global level. CISOs are trying to reassess their organizations' capabilities in order to manage the chaos when it inevitably arises.

A full 77% of those surveyed said they would allocate greater budgets for cyber-crisis simulations if the exercises themselves were more realistic and actionable. 

"Preparedness is the foundation of resilience, and crisis simulations play a crucial role in testing organizations security and workforce performance when it's most critical," said Haris Pylarinos, CEO and founder at Hack The Box, in a statement. "Organizations are right to prioritize crisis simulation, and must ensure that these are implemented in the right way."

Also, 73% of survey respondents reported that crisis simulations and incident-response exercises for both their technical and non-technical teams were their top business priority this year.

Pylarinos highlighted that crisis simulation will continue to evolve, pairing artificial intelligence with expert knowledge in order to provide tailored and realistic scenarios that reflect challenges that security teams and management will face on digital front lines. "It will unite previously disparate business units as one," he said, "and allow real-world performance to be benchmarked in a controlled environment."

Critical security flaw in SonicWall SMA 1000 appliances (CVE-2025-23006) exploited as a zero-day. Rated CVSS 9.8, patch immediately to protect systems.

**SonicWall** has identified a critical security flaw in its Secure Mobile Access (SMA) 1000 Series appliances, which it believes has been exploited as a zero-day vulnerability. Learn about the vulnerability, impact, and how to mitigate the risk.

SonicWall issued a security advisory (SNWLID-2025-0002) on January 22nd, 2025, urging customers to address a critical zero-day vulnerability (**CVE-2025-23006)** impacting its Secure Mobile Access (SMA) 1000 Series appliances. Microsoft Threat Intelligence Centre discovered the flaw.

The vulnerability, rated 9.8 out of 10.0 on the CVSS scoring system, occurs due to improper handling of untrusted data during deserialization in the AMC (Appliance Management Console) and CMC (Central Management Console) components of the SMA 1000. Deserialization is a technical term for converting a stream of data back into a usable format. 

In this case, attackers can exploit weaknesses in how the SMA 1000 handles external data, possibly injecting malicious code to execute arbitrary commands on the system. The consequences of exploiting this vulnerability are severe. A successful attack could allow remote, unauthenticated attackers to gain complete control over affected devices. 

Moreover, attackers could steal sensitive information stored on the appliance, including user credentials, configuration data, or even confidential business documents, and may manipulate or disable critical system functions, rendering the appliance inoperable. Furthermore, a compromised SMA 1000 appliance could be used as a launching pad for further attacks within the network. 

Under certain conditions, this flaw could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands, potentially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

SonicWall, a provider of secure remote access solutions for organizations like managed security service providers, enterprises, and government agencies, has been notified of potential active exploitation by unknown threat actors and urges customers to apply the fixes promptly. Germany’s CERT-Bund has also **issued advisories** (PDF) for immediate patch implementation, citing online exposure of 2,380 SMA1000 devices on Shodan.

Here’s what SonicWall recommended in its **advisory**:

*   Apply the Hotfix Immediately: Update your SMA 1000 appliance to the latest hotfix version (12.4.3-02854 or higher) to patch the vulnerability.

*   Restrict Access to Management Consoles: As a temporary workaround, limit access to the AMC and CMC consoles to trusted sources only. Refer to the SMA 1000 Administration Guide for best practices on securing these consoles.

This vulnerability exclusively impacts SonicWall SMA 1000 Series appliances running version 12.4.3-02804 (or earlier). SonicWall Firewalls and SMA 100 series products are not affected.

In a comment to Hackread.com, Bugcrowd founder **Casey Ellis** described the vulnerability as “gnarly” and emphasized that it reflects a broader trend of attackers increasingly targeting weaknesses in remote access systems and network devices.

_“_This vulnerability is gnarly and continues the trend of targeting vulnerabilities in Remote Access systems and network concentrators. Aside from patching, organizations should ensure that management interfaces for the SMA 1000, or any other device for that matter given the cluster of vulnerabilities, research, and exploitation, are not publicly accessible._“_

SonicWall SMA Appliances Exploited in Zero-Day Attacks

In the wee hours of Saturday night, TikTok cut off access to users in the United States ahead of Sunday’s deadline that forced Apple and Google to remove the video-sharing app from their app stores. While TikTok was dark, US users raced to get around the TikTok ban while several other unexpected apps saw their access to Americans severed as well. By midday on Sunday, however, TikTok access was already coming back in the US. By Monday night, newly inaugurated US president Donald Trump had signed an executive order delaying the TikTok ban by 75 days.

On Tuesday, Trump made good on his promise to free Ross Ulbricht, the imprisoned creator of the Silk Road dark-web market, where users sold drugs, guns, and worse. Ulbricht had spent more than 11 years behind bars after he was arrested by the FBI in 2013 and later sentenced to life in prison. Trump’s decision to pardon Ulbricht is largely seen as linked to the support he’s received from the libertarian cryptocurrency community, which has long considered the Silk Road creator a martyr.

**Judge Says Controversial FBI Searches Require a Warrant**

A US judge in New York this week found that the FBI’s practice of searching data on US persons under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act without obtaining a warrant is unconstitutional. FISA gives the US government the authority to collect the communications of foreign entities through internet providers and companies like Apple and Google. Once this data was collected, the FBI could perform “backdoor searches” for information on US citizens or residents who communicated with foreigners, and it did so without first obtaining a warrant. Judge DeArcy Hall found that these searches do require a warrant. “To hold otherwise would effectively allow law enforcement to amass a repository of communications under Section 702—including those of US persons—that can later be searched on demand without limitation,” the judge wrote.

**Cloudflare Function Could Expose App Users’ Rough Location**

An “issue” with the basic functionality of internet infrastructure company Cloudflare’s content delivery network, or CDN, can reveal the coarse location of people using apps, including those meant for protecting privacy, according to findings from an independent security researcher. Cloudflare has servers in hundreds of cities and more than 100 countries around the world. Its CDN works by caching peoples’ internet traffic across its servers then delivering that data from the server closest to a person’s location. The security researcher, who goes by Daniel, found a way to send an image to a target, collect the URL, then use a custom-built tool to query Cloudflare to find out which data center delivered the image—and thus the state or possibly the city the target is in. Fortunately, Cloudflare tells 404 Media that it fixed the issue after Daniel reported it.

**Trump Administration Disbands Review Board Investigating China’s Salt Typhoon Attacks**

In one of its first moves after Trump took office on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security let go everyone on the agency’s advisory committees. This includes the Cyber Safety Review Board, which was investigating widespread attacks on the US telecommunications system by the China-backed hacker group Salt Typhoon. US authorities revealed in mid-November that Salt Typhoon had embedded itself in at least nine US telecoms for espionage purposes, potentially exposing anyone using unencrypted calls and text message to surveillance by Beijing. While the future of the CSRB remains uncertain, sources tell reporter Eric Geller that their investigation into Salt Typhoon’s attacks is effectively “dead.”
