CVE-2022-40660: ZDI-22-1216

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of NIKON NIS-Elements Viewer 1.2100.1483.0. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PSD images. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-15135.

VULNERABILITY DETAILS

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of NIKON NIS-Elements Viewer. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PSD images. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process.

03/29/22 – The vendor asked for the reports to be sent again.

03/29/22 – ZDI resent the reports to the vendor.

08/24/22 – ZDI requested an update.

08/24/22 – The vendor advised that the reports did not meet the bar for servicing because it is a legacy product.

09/09/22 –  ZDI notified the vendor of the intention to publish the cases as 0-day advisories on 09/13/22.

– Mitigation: Given the nature of the vulnerability, the only salient mitigation strategy is to restrict interaction with the application.
