Twitter has also suspended the accounts of several journalists from organizations such as CNN, The Washington Post, Mashable, The New York Times, The Intercept, etc.

On Wednesday, @ElonJet, an account that tracks the movements of **Elon Musk**’s personal jet, was suspended from Twitter. This comes after Musk stated in November that the account was a “direct personal safety risk” but he would still not ban it due to his “commitment to free speech.” 

Twitter also introduced a new policy, following the @ElonJet account suspension, prohibiting sharing live location information that includes sharing “links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes.” This was only the beginning of another long series of bans.

**Twitter Suspends Mastodon from Twitter**

Twitter has now suspended Mastodon’s **official Twitter account** and although the exact reason is not clear, it’s likely that Mastodon’s tweet about @ElonJet had something to do with it.

**Mastodon** is a decentralised social network for people looking for a Twitter-like alternative and has recently gained overwhelming popularity in a very short amount of time. Before Mastodon’s Twitter account was suspended, its last tweet pointed to @ElonJet’s Mastodon account which appears to be a violation of the new policy against sharing live locations. 

Moreover, Twitter seems to be blocking tweets that link to a lot of major Mastodon servers. If you tweet too many Mastodon links, an error message appears stating, “We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful.” 

This follows after Twitter suspended the accounts of quite a few notable journalists on Thursday despite Elon Musk’s constant proclamations of free speech. 

New York Times reporter **Ryan Mac**, The Washington Post’s **Drew Harwell**, Mashable’s **Matt Binder**, CNN reporter **Donie O’Sullivan**, The Intercept’s **Micah Lee**, political commentator **Keith Olbermann**, independent journalist **Aaron Rupar**, and freelance journalist Tony Webster were removed from the platform.

Suspended accounts of journalists

Musk **declared** that the suspensions were a result of “doxxing,” in a reply to Breitbart’s Rebecca Mansour’s concern over the suspensions. Although Musk claimed that his family was endangered, **stating** in a separate tweet that,

“They posted my exact real-time location, basically assassination coordinates, in (obvious) direct violation of Twitter terms of service,” there is no evidence of the journalists endangering Musk or his family in any way. 

“I was banned on Thursday night immediately after sharing a screenshot from CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan moments after he was suspended,” Binder told Rolling Stone. “The screenshot was an official LAPD statement regarding the incident Elon Musk was tweeting out about last night which led him to suspend ElonJet and its creator Jack Sweeney. I did not share any location data, as per Twitter’s new terms. Nor did I share any links to ElonJet or other location-tracking accounts. I have been highly critical of Musk but never broke any of Twitter’s listed policies.”

Musk’s reign over Twitter has spiralled into a frenzy of account suspensions despite him advocating for “free speech” and tweeting catchphrases like “Sunlight is the best disinfectant” and “Transparency is the key to trust.” In April, he memorably posted, “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter because that is what free speech means.”

Although this news simply adds to the pile of controversies ever since **Musk’s $ 44 billion takeover of Twitter**, it is yet another reminder that Twitter is working towards its own demise.

Apple has released new security content for iOS 16.1.2 and Safari 16.2. Normally we would say that Apple pushed out updates, but in this mysterious case the advisory is about an iPhone software update Apple released two weeks ago. As it turns out, to fix a zero-day security vulnerability that was actively exploited.

**Mitigation**

The updates should all have reached you in your regular update routines, but it doesn't hurt to check if your device is at the latest update level.

Since the vulnerability we’ll discuss below is already being exploited, it's important that you update your devices as soon as you can.

**CVE-2022-42856**

Apple revealed that it is aware that threat actors are actively exploiting the vulnerability listed as CVE-2022-42856. The bug was found in WebKit which is Apple’s web rendering engine. In other words, WebKit is the browser engine that powers Safari and other apps. So, it’s no surprise that you will find the same CVE number in the Safari security advisory, along with a list of others.

Apple says the impact of the vulnerability is that processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. The underlying issue was what is called a "type confusion" issue, which was addressed with improved state handling.

Type confusion vulnerabilities are programming flaws that happen when a piece of code doesn’t verify the type of object that is passed to it before using it. Type confusion can allow an attacker to feed function pointers or data into the wrong piece of code. In some cases, this can lead to code execution.

Another clue was given when Apple revealed that security researchers at Google’s Threat Analysis Group, which investigates nation state-backed spyware, hacking, and cyberattacks, discovered and reported the WebKit bug. That might give you an idea about who was using the exploit in the wild.

**Version confusion**

What remains a mystery is why Apple specifically stated that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS released before iOS 15.1.

We asked our resident Apple expert Thomas Reed why, then, did iOS 16 users get an update and iOS 15 users didn’t?

He pointed out the fact that Apple recently documented that security fixes may only apply to the latest system, and may not be back-ported to older systems. This has always been the case, but it wasn't documented, leaving users guessing about what was going on.

> “Still, Apple has been known to back-port fixes when they're aware of active attacks on an older system, so I doubt it's just a matter of falling back on a disclaimer. That suggests to me that there's some difficulty involved. I don't know exactly what changed in WebKit between iOS 15 and 16, but there were definitely a lot of Safari-related changes in iOS 16, so it's entirely possible there's some kind of architectural change standing in the way of back-porting.”

Called **MCCrash**, the botnet is characterized by a unique spreading mechanism that allows it to propagate to Linux-based devices despite originating from malicious software downloads on Windows hosts.

"The botnet spreads by enumerating default credentials on internet-exposed Secure Shell (SSH)-enabled devices," the company said in a report. "Because IoT devices are commonly enabled for remote configuration with potentially insecure settings, these devices could be at risk to attacks like this botnet."

This also means that the malware could persist on IoT devices even after removing it from the infected source PC. The tech giant's cybersecurity division is tracking the activity cluster under its emerging moniker DEV-1028.

A majority of the infections have been reported in Russia, and to a lesser extent in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Czechia, Italy, India, and Indonesia. The company did not disclose the exact scale of the campaign.

The initial infection point for the botnet is a pool of machines that have been compromised through the installation of cracking tools that claim to provide illegal Windows licenses.

The software subsequently acts as a conduit to execute a Python payload that contains the core features of the botnet, including scanning for SSH-enabled Linux devices to launch a dictionary attack.

Upon breaching a Linux host using the propagation method, the same Python payload is deployed to run DDoS commands, one of which is specifically set up to crash Minecraft servers ("ATTACK\_MCCRASH").

Microsoft described the method as "highly efficient," noting it's likely offered as a service on underground forums.

"This type of threat stresses the importance of ensuring that organizations manage, keep up to date, and monitor not just traditional endpoints but also IoT devices that are often less secure," researchers David Atch, Maayan Shaul, Mae Dotan, Yuval Gordon, and Ross Bevington said.

The findings come days after Fortinet FortiGuard Labs revealed details of a new botnet dubbed GoTrim, which has been observed brute-forcing self-hosted WordPress websites.
