Vulnerability hunting with Semmle QL, part 1

Previously on this blog, we’ve talked about how MSRC automates the root cause analysis of vulnerabilities reported and found. After doing this, our next step is variant analysis: finding and investigating any variants of the vulnerability. It’s important that we find all such variants and patch them simultaneously, otherwise we bear the risk of these being exploited in the wild. In this post, I’d like to explain the automation we use in variant finding. For the past year or so, we’ve been augmenting our manual code review processes with Semmle, a third-party static analysis environment. It compiles code to a relational database (the snapshot database – a combination of database and source code), which is queried using Semmle QL, a declarative, object-oriented query language designed for program analysis. The basic workflow is that, after root cause analysis, we write queries to find code patterns that are semantically similar to the original vulnerability. Any results are triaged as us...

CVE-2018-8375

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft Excel software when the software fails to properly handle objects in memory, aka "Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerability." This affects Microsoft Excel Viewer, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel. This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2018-8379.

CVE-2017-14446: TALOS-2017-0495 || Cisco Talos Intelligence Group

An exploitable stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. The HTTP server implementation unsafely extracts parameters from the query string, leading to a buffer overflow on the stack. An attacker can send an HTTP GET request to trigger this vulnerability.

CVE-2017-14445: TALOS-2017-0494 || Cisco Talos Intelligence Group

An exploitable buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. The HTTP server implementation incorrectly handles the host parameter during a firmware update request, leading to a buffer overflow on a global section. An attacker can send an HTTP GET request to trigger this vulnerability.

CVE-2017-14444: TALOS-2017-0493 || Cisco Talos Intelligence Group

An exploitable buffer overflow vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. The HTTP server implementation incorrectly handles the URL parameter during a firmware update request, leading to a buffer overflow on a global section. An attacker can send an HTTP GET request to trigger this vulnerability.

CVE-2018-14678: 274 - Xen Security Advisories

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.17.11, as used in Xen through 4.11.x. The xen_failsafe_callback entry point in arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S does not properly maintain RBX, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory usage and system crash). Within Xen, 64-bit x86 PV Linux guest OS users can trigger a guest OS crash or possibly gain privileges.

CVE-2017-2621: 1420990 – (CVE-2017-2621) CVE-2017-2621 openstack-heat: /var/log/heat/ is world readable

An access-control flaw was found in the OpenStack Orchestration (heat) service before 8.0.0, 6.1.0 and 7.0.2 where a service log directory was improperly made world readable. A malicious system user could exploit this flaw to access sensitive information.

CVE-2018-1999001: Jenkins Security Advisory 2018-07-18

A unauthorized modification of configuration vulnerability exists in Jenkins 2.132 and earlier, 2.121.1 and earlier in User.java that allows attackers to provide crafted login credentials that cause Jenkins to move the config.xml file from the Jenkins home directory. If Jenkins is started without this file present, it will revert to the legacy defaults of granting administrator access to anonymous users.

CVE-2018-1999004: Jenkins Security Advisory 2018-07-18

A Improper authorization vulnerability exists in Jenkins 2.132 and earlier, 2.121.1 and earlier in SlaveComputer.java that allows attackers with Overall/Read permission to initiate agent launches, and abort in-progress agent launches.

CVE-2018-1999003: Jenkins Security Advisory 2018-07-18

A Improper authorization vulnerability exists in Jenkins 2.132 and earlier, 2.121.1 and earlier in Queue.java that allows attackers with Overall/Read permission to cancel queued builds.
