processors, the Linux kernel's protections against speculative branch

Abhishek Shah discovered a race condition in the PF_KEYv2 implementation in  
the Linux kernel. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of

Linux kernel did not properly handle certain error conditions, leading to a  
use-after-free vulnerability with some network device drivers. A local  
attacker with admin access to the network device could use this to cause a

It was discovered that the IDT 77252 ATM PCI device driver in the Linux  
kernel did not properly remove any pending timers during device exit,

storage controller driver in the Linux kernel did not properly handle

Sönke Huster discovered that a use-after-free vulnerability existed in the  
WiFi driver stack in the Linux kernel. A physically proximate attacker  
could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly

Update instructions:

(e.g. linux-generic, linux-generic-lts-RELEASE, linux-virtual,  
linux-powerpc), a standard system upgrade will automatically perform

The framework has ties back to a Spanish exploit broker called Variston IT, and offers a one-stop shop for compromising Chrome, Defender and Firefox.

Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has discovered a cyberattack framework dubbed Heliconia, built to exploit zero-day and n-day vulnerabilities in Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Defender. It likely has connections to a gray-market spyware broker called Variston IT, which highlights how this shadowy segment is flourishing.

The Heliconia threat consists of three modules:

*   Heliconia Noise for compromising the Chrome browser, escaping the sandbox, and installing malware;
*   Heliconia Soft, a Web framework that deploys a PDF containing a Windows Defender exploit for CVE-2021-42298 that allows privilege escalation to SYSTEM and remote code execution (RCE);
*   And the Heliconia Files package which contains a fully documented Firefox exploit chain for Windows and Linux, including CVE-2022-26485 for RCE.

TAG became aware of the threat after receiving an anonymous submission to the Chrome bug reporting program. Upon further investigation, the Heliconia framework's source code was found to contain a script that points back to Variston IT, a Barcelona-headquartered entity that claims to provide "custom security solutions."

Commercial spyware is often sold by organizations claiming to be legitimate companies, for "use by law enforcement." However, mounting evidence shows that too often, these brokers don't vet their clients, "putting advanced surveillance capabilities in the hands of governments who use them to spy on journalists, human rights activists, political opposition and dissidents," according to a TAG posting on Wednesday.

Researchers noted that Variston IT is firmly in the middle of this proliferating market — a space that has seen sanctioning by the United States and others against organizations like the infamous NSO Group, creator of the Pegasus spyware.

"The commercial surveillance industry is thriving and has expanded significantly in recent years, creating risk for Internet users around the globe," TAG researchers added. "While surveillance technology may be legal under national or international laws, they are often used in harmful ways to conduct digital espionage against a range of groups."

So far, none of the modules has been seen in current attacks in the wild, but TAG researchers noted that they've likely been deployed in the past, including using the exploits they contain as zero-days before they were fixed.

Google TAG Warns on Emerging Heliconia Exploit Framework for RCE

The North Korea-linked **ScarCruft** group has been attributed to a previously undocumented backdoor called **Dolphin** that the threat actor has used against targets located in its southern counterpart.

"The backdoor \[...\] has a wide range of spying capabilities, including monitoring drives and portable devices and exfiltrating files of interest, keylogging and taking screenshots, and stealing credentials from browsers," ESET researcher Filip Jurčacko said in a new report published today.

Dolphin is said to be selectively deployed, with the malware using cloud services like Google Drive for data exfiltration as well as command-and-control.

The Slovak cybersecurity company said it found the implant deployed as a final-stage payload as part of a watering hole attack in early 2021 directed against a South Korean digital newspaper.

The campaign, first uncovered by Kaspersky and Volexity last year, entailed the weaponization of two Internet Explorer flaws (CVE-2020-1380 and CVE-2021-26411) to drop a backdoor named BLUELIGHT.

ScarCruft, also called APT37, InkySquid, Reaper, and Ricochet Chollima, is a geo-political motivated APT group that has a track record of attacking government entities, diplomats, and news organizations associated with North Korean affairs. It's been known to be active since at least 2012.

Earlier this April, cybersecurity firm Stairwell disclosed details of a spear-phishing attack targeting journalists covering the country with the ultimate goal of deploying a malware dubbed GOLDBACKDOOR that shares overlaps with another ScarCruft backdoor named BLUELIGHT.

The latest findings from ESET shed light on a second, more sophisticated backdoor delivered to a small pool of victims via BLUELIGHT, indicative of a highly-targeted espionage operation.

This, in turn, is achieved by executing an installer shellcode that activates a loader comprising a Python and shellcode component, the latter of which runs another shellcode loader to drop the backdoor.

"While the BLUELIGHT backdoor performs basic reconnaissance and evaluation of the compromised machine after exploitation, Dolphin is more sophisticated and manually deployed only against selected victims," Jurčacko explained.

What makes Dolphin a lot more potent than BLUELIGHT is its ability to search removable devices and exfiltrate files of interest, such as media, documents, emails, and certificates.

The backdoor, since its original discovery in April 2021, is said to have undergone three successive iterations that come with its own set of feature improvements and grant it more detection evasion capabilities.

"Dolphin is another addition to ScarCruft's extensive arsenal of backdoors abusing cloud storage services," Jurčacko said. "One unusual capability found in prior versions of the backdoor is the ability to modify the settings of victims' Google and Gmail accounts to lower their security, presumably in order to maintain account access for the threat actors."

From phishing attacks to selling fake tickets, scammers have set up thousands of domains to trick FIFA World Cup 2022 fans in Qatar.

Seeing as scammers readily jump to capitalize on events with huge global interest, it comes as no surprise that Group-IB detected numerous scams and **phishing attacks** targeting football fans invested in buying tickets, official merchandise, and jobs at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. 

Before the tournament even began, researchers from the Group-IB Digital Risk Protection team identified scam domains, fake social media accounts, advertisements, and mobile applications luring users to enter their personal information and banking credentials.

One of the scam schemes identified was a fake merchandise website that in some cases, directed the money from the transaction to the scammers and in other cases, stole the user’s banking credentials. Either way, users never got their national team’s shirt.

The scammers also utilized more than 130 advertisements on social media apps to drive traffic toward the site. 

Tickets for the FIFA World Cup were yet another opportunity for scammers to try and sell fake ones to unsuspecting users looking to purchase tickets for the games. By tracking five websites and more than 50 accounts on social media created no earlier than September 2022 and mentioning the words “FIFA”, “World Cup” and “tickets”, Group-IB identified potential scams. Again, scammers either received funds from the transaction or stole the bank card details. 

In its report shared with Hackread.com, Group-IB noted up to 40 fake applications were found on Google Play Store, promising users access to tickets for the games.

Another five scam websites were found using keywords such as “job” and “Qatar” which utilized the official tournament logo to make the site appear credible for those looking to find work at the World Cup. Another 30 social media pages were created by threat actors to promote their scam pages. 

Furthermore, it wasn’t just the World Cup that was targeted but also large brands, including thousands that used the branding of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Group-IB identified and analyzed more than 16,000 fake surveys impersonating such brands.

Current authentication methods are based on the bearer model, but lack of visibility into the entities leveraging API secrets has made this untenable.

Today most API communication between machines is secured through API secrets — static keys, tokens, or PKI certificates that act like system passwords in order to authenticate machines and broker communication between them. These machines could be cloud workloads, pods, containers, servers, virtual machines, microservices, or physical machines like servers or Internet of Things devices.

The challenge with current mechanisms of securing authentication between machines is that they all prescribe a bearer model of authentication. As long as an API key, token, or certificate is valid, it can be held and used from anywhere, even a nefarious machine. The model does not guarantee trusted access or trust in the API client. Further adding to the risk is that these API secrets are often long-lived and cumbersome to maintain hygiene around.

Perfect security hygiene would mean each API secret is uniquely assigned to only one machine, never shared, routinely rotated. and securely distributed through development and deployment systems to the machine that needs it without the risk of being leaked along the way. The reality is API secrets are often shared across dozens or hundreds of machines and workloads. They are rarely, if ever, rotated, and provisioning and managing secrets across different applications and environments is an arduous task.

**The Cost of Secrets**

According to a 2021 report by 1Password, IT and DevOps spend an average of over 25 minutes each day managing secrets, at an estimated payroll expense of $8.5 billion annually across companies in the US. In a world where development and deployment systems are fully automated, provisioning and rotating secrets continues to be a very manual, laborious process.

Leaked infrastructure secrets come at a measurable cost. Exposed code, credentials, and keys — whether they are exposed accidentally or intentionally — cost companies an average of $1.2 million in revenue per year, according to the 1Password report.

More recently, the static nature of API secrets has made them ripe targets for adversaries. Much like passwords, secrets tend to become more vulnerable as they age — a problem that is only compounded when those secrets are being shared across dozens, sometimes hundreds of different workloads. Today, secrets are getting leaked at an alarming rate in code repositories, continuous integration (CI) systems like Jenkins or Travis, orchestration tools like Kubernetes, and cloud hosting environments like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure. Ditto for logging tools like Splunk and Elastic and even collaboration environments like Slack. Organizations leaked more than 6 million passwords, API keys, and other sensitive data in 2021, doubling the number from the previous year, according to a recent GitGuardian review.

**Tools to Improve Things**

Enterprises can take extra steps to keep their secrets more secure. Secrets management solutions like vaults or secrets managers help organize and better secure these system passwords. But if your organization happens to be operating workloads with all three cloud providers, your team will have to leverage three proprietary secrets management systems in order to safeguard those secrets — Azure Key Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, and Secret Manager for GCP.

Tools do exist that can scan your environments to find hard-coded secrets in source code, code repositories, CI environments, and logging systems. Some tools can also scan public personal and organization repositories for secrets that may have already been exposed.

**An Unbearable Burden**

One significant blind spot for many engineering and security teams is visibility into the identities of the machines, applications, services, or workloads that are leveraging API secrets. If it isn't already broken by this point, that becomes the point where the bearer model starts to break down.

Between the manual nature of secrets management, the vulnerability of these static values, and the way the explosion of API usage has significantly increased the amount of compromised keys, tokens, and certificates, not having visibility into the entities that are leveraging API secrets has made the bearer model untenable. CISA's zero-trust framework and NIST 800-207 provide guidelines around how organizations think about machines and workloads as nonperson entities — where the user isn't a human, but rather another application or service account.

While CISA and NIST guidelines assist organizations in handling identity and access, the solution to this problem has already been established for human-to-machine interactions: multifactor authentication (MFA). If we think about the genesis of MFA as it relates to applications and services human users are accessing, the purpose is to validate the user identity with a set of credentials. Many companies require employees to enable MFA to ensure that it is indeed Jane who is trying to access the CRM application with her username and password, just in case her user credentials were compromised. The static nature of passwords, coupled with how long they tend to age well past most security guidelines, makes them ripe targets for adversaries, which is why many organizations mandate MFA to access applications that contain sensitive data.

The bearer model is no different — keys, tokens, and certificates are static values that act as system passwords. The challenge many organizations face is having visibility into the identities of the machines, applications, workloads, or services that are ultimately leveraging those credentials.

API Secrets: Where the Bearer Model Breaks Down

New functionality further reduces the risk of lateral movement.

Delinea Introduces Granular Privileged Access Controls on Servers

The app, named Symoo (com.vanjan.sms), had over 100,000 downloads and functioned as a relay for transmitting messages to a server, which advertises an account creation service.

A malicious Android SMS application found on the Google Play Store has been found to stealthily harvest text messages with the goal of creating accounts on a wide range of platforms like Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp.

The app, named Symoo (com.vanjan.sms), had over 100,000 downloads and functioned as a relay for transmitting messages to a server, which advertises an account creation service.

This is achieved by using the phone numbers associated with the infected devices as a means to gather the one-time password that's typically sent to verify the user when setting up new accounts.

"The malware asks the phone number of the user in the first screen," security researcher Maxime Ingrao, who discovered the malware, said, while also requesting for SMS permissions.

"Then it pretends to load the application but remains all the time on this page, it is to hide the interface of the received SMS and that the user does not see the SMS of subscriptions to the various services."

Some of the major services illegally signed up using the phone numbers include Amazon, Discord, Facebook, Google, Instagram, KakaoTalk, Microsoft, Nike, Telegram, TikTok, Tinder, Viber, and WhatsApp, among others.

Additionally, the data collected by the malware is exfiltrated to a domain named "goomy\[.\]fun," which was previously used in another malicious application called Virtual Number (com.programmatics.virtualnumber) that has since been removed from the Play store.

The app's developer, Walven, has also been linked to another Android app known as ActivationPW - Virtual numbers (com.programmatics.activation) that claims to offer "virtual numbers to receive SMS verification" from more than 200 countries for less than 50 cents.

According to Ingrao, Symoo and ActivationPW represent the two ends of the fraudulent scheme, wherein the phone numbers of the hacked devices that have the former installed are employed to help users buy accounts through the latter.

Google told The Hacker News that the two apps have been removed from the Play Store and that the developer has been banned.

This is achieved by using the phone numbers associated with the infected devices as a means to gather the one-time password that's typically sent to verify the user when setting up new accounts.

"The malware asks the phone number of the user in the first screen," security researcher Maxime Ingrao, who discovered the malware, said, while also requesting for SMS permissions.

"Then it pretends to load the application but remains all the time on this page, it is to hide the interface of the received SMS and that the user does not see the SMS of subscriptions to the various services."

Some of the major services illegally signed up using the phone numbers include Amazon, Discord, Facebook, Google, Instagram, KakaoTalk, Microsoft, Nike, Telegram, TikTok, Tinder, Viber, and WhatsApp, among others.

Additionally, the data collected by the malware is exfiltrated to a domain named "goomy\[.\]fun," which was previously used in another malicious application called Virtual Number (com.programmatics.virtualnumber) that has since been taken down from the Play Store.

The app's developer, Walven, has also been linked to another Android app known as ActivationPW - Virtual numbers (com.programmatics.activation) that claims to offer "virtual numbers to receive SMS verification" from more than 200 countries for less than 50 cents.

According to Ingrao, Symoo and ActivationPW represent the two ends of the fraudulent scheme, wherein the phone numbers of the hacked devices that have the former installed are employed to help users buy accounts through the latter.

Google told The Hacker News that the two apps have been removed from the Play Store and that the developer has been banned.

November saw the release of patches from the likes of Apple’s iOS, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Windows to fix multiple security vulnerabilities. Some of these issues are pretty severe, and several have already been exploited by attackers. 

Here’s what you need to know about all the important updates released in the past month.

Apple iOS and iPadOS 16.1.1

Apple has released iOS and iPadOS 16.1.1, which the iPhone maker recommends all users apply. The patch fixes two security vulnerabilities—and given the speed of the release, you can assume they are pretty serious. 

Tracked as CVE-2022-40303 and CVE-2022-40304, the two flaws in the libxml2 software library could allow an attacker to execute code remotely, according to Apple’s support page. The issues were both reported by security researchers working for Google’s Project Zero. 

For Mac users, the flaws were addressed by macOS Ventura 13.0.1.

The good news is, it’s believed neither vulnerability has been exploited by attackers, but it’s still a good idea to apply the update as soon as possible. 

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft’s November Patch Tuesday was another big release, seeing the Windows maker fix 68 vulnerabilities, four of which were zero days. 

Tracked as CVE-2022-41073, the first is a Windows print spooler elevation of privilege vulnerability that could allow a cybercriminal to gain system privileges. Meanwhile, CVE-2022-41125 is a Windows Cryptographic Next Generation key isolation issue that could allow an adversary to escalate privileges and gain control of the system. CVE-2022-41128 is a Windows scripting language vulnerability that could result in remote code execution. Lastly, CVE-2022-41091 is a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Mark of the Web security feature.

Google Android

More big updates for users of Google’s Android devices have arrived in November, with Google issuing patches for multiple vulnerabilities, some of which are serious. At the top of the list is a high-severity vulnerability in the Framework component that could lead to local escalation of privilege, Google said in a security advisory.

The patches in November include two Google Play system updates for issues impacting the Media Framework components (CVE-2022-2209) and WiFi (CVE-2022-20463). Google also fixed five issues affecting its Pixel devices.

The Android updates have started to roll out to Samsung devices, including third- and fourth-generation Galaxy foldables. You can check for the update in your Settings. 

Google Chrome 

The world’s most popular browser continues to be a major target for attackers, with Google this month fixing its eighth zero-day vulnerability this year. 

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2022-4135, is a heap buffer overflow in GPU reported by Clement Lecigne, a researcher in Google's own threat analysis group. Google said it “is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-4135 exists in the wild.”

Earlier in the month, Google issued an update to fix 10 Chrome vulnerabilities, six of which are rated as high-severity. These include four use-after-free bugs: CVE-2022-3885, CVE-2022-3886, CVE-2022-3887, and CVE-2022-3888. Meanwhile, CVE-2022-3889 is a “type confusion” issue in V8, and CVE-2022-3890 is a heap buffer overflow in Crashpad. 

Mozilla Firefox

November was also a big month for Google Chrome competitor Firefox. Mozilla has issued Firefox 107, fixing 19 security vulnerabilities, eight of which are marked as having a high impact. 

One of the most important patches is for CVE-2022-45404, a full-screen notification bypass that could allow an attacker to cause a window to go full-screen without the user seeing the notification prompt. This could result in spoofing attacks. Meanwhile, several use-after-free bugs could lead to an exploitable crash, and one flaw could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

VMWare

Software maker VMWare has released security fixes for multiple security vulnerabilities in its VMware Workspace ONE Assist, three of which have a CVSSv3 base score of 9.8. The first, CVE-2022-31685, is an authentication bypass vulnerability. “A malicious actor with network access to Workspace ONE Assist may be able to obtain administrative access without the need to authenticate to the application,” VMWare warned in an advisory.

A broken authentication method vulnerability tracked as CVE-2022-31686 could enable a malicious actor with network access to obtain admin access without the need to authenticate.
