Ubuntu Security Notice USN-6435-1
October 18, 2023
openssl vulnerabilities
A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives:
- Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Available with Ubuntu Pro)
- Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Available with Ubuntu Pro)
Summary:
OpenSSL could be made to consume resources and cause long delays
if it processed certain input.
Software Description:
- openssl: Secure Socket Layer (SSL) cryptographic library and tools
Details:
It was discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled excessively large
Diffie-Hellman parameters. An attacker could possibly use this issue
to cause a denial of service. (CVE-2023-3446)
Bernd Edlinger discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled excessively
large Diffie-Hellman parameters. An attacker could possibly use this
issue to cause a denial of service. (CVE-2023-3817)
Update instructions:
The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package versions:
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Available with Ubuntu Pro):
libssl1.1 1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.23+esm1
openssl 1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.23+esm1
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Available with Ubuntu Pro):
libssl1.0.0 1.0.2g-1ubuntu4.20+esm10
openssl 1.0.2g-1ubuntu4.20+esm10
After a standard system update you need to reboot your computer to make
all the necessary changes.

An issue exists in SoftIron HyperCloud where compute nodes may come online immediately without following the correct initialization process. In this instance, workloads may be scheduled on these nodes and deploy to a failed or erroneous state, which impacts the availability of these workloads that may be deployed during this time window. This issue impacts HyperCloud versions from 2.0.0 to before 2.0.3.
Under certain conditions, a low privileged attacker could load a specially crafted file during installation or upgrade to escalate privileges on Windows and Linux hosts.
Under certain conditions, Nessus Network Monitor could allow a low privileged user to escalate privileges to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM on Windows hosts by replacing a specially crafted file.
Ubuntu Security Notice 6450-1 - Tony Battersby discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled key and initialization vector lengths. This could lead to truncation issues and result in loss of confidentiality for some symmetric cipher modes. Juerg Wullschleger discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled the AES-SIV cipher. This could lead to empty data entries being ignored, resulting in certain applications being misled. This issue only affected Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 23.04.

Issue summary: Checking excessively long DH keys or parameters may be very slow. Impact summary: Applications that use the functions DH_check(), DH_check_ex() or EVP_PKEY_param_check() to check a DH key or DH parameters may experience long delays. Where the key or parameters that are being checked have been obtained from an untrusted source this may lead to a Denial of Service. The function DH_check() performs various checks on DH parameters. After fixing CVE-2023-3446 it was discovered that a large q parameter value can also trigger an overly long computation during some of these checks. A correct q value, if present, cannot be larger than the modulus p parameter, thus it is unnecessary to perform these checks if q is larger than p. An application that calls DH_check() and supplies a key or parameters obtained from an untrusted source could be vulnerable to a Denial of Service attack. The function DH_check() is itself called by a number of other OpenSSL functions. An application c...

Where the key or parameters that are being checked have been obtained from an untrusted source this may lead to a Denial of Service. The function DH_check() performs various checks on DH parameters. One of those checks confirms that the modulus ('p' parameter) is not too large. Trying to use a very large modulus is slow and OpenSSL will not normally use a modulus which is over 10,000 bits in length. However the DH_check() function checks numerous aspects of the key or parameters that have been supplied. Some of those checks use the supplied modulus value even if it has already been found to be too large. An application that calls DH_check() and supplies a key or parameters obtained from an untrusted source could be vulernable to a Denial ...
