Red Hat Security Advisory

Synopsis: Important: kernel-rt security and bug fix update
Advisory ID: RHSA-2023:3708-01
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Advisory URL: https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2023:3708
Issue date: 2023-06-21
CVE Names: CVE-2023-2002 CVE-2023-2124 CVE-2023-2194
CVE-2023-2235 CVE-2023-28466 CVE-2023-32233
=====================================================================

  1. Summary:

An update for kernel-rt is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.

Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact
of Important. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score,
which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability
from the CVE link(s) in the References section.

  1. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux NFV (v. 9) - x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux RT (v. 9) - x86_64

  1. Description:

The kernel-rt packages provide the Real Time Linux Kernel, which enables
fine-tuning for systems with extremely high determinism requirements.

Security Fix(es):

  • kernel: use-after-free vulnerability in the perf_group_detach function of
    the Linux Kernel Performance Events (CVE-2023-2235)

  • kernel: netfilter: use-after-free in nf_tables when processing batch
    requests can lead to privilege escalation (CVE-2023-32233)

  • Kernel: bluetooth: Unauthorized management command execution
    (CVE-2023-2002)

  • kernel: OOB access in the Linux kernel’s XFS subsystem (CVE-2023-2124)

  • kernel: i2c: out-of-bounds write in xgene_slimpro_i2c_xfer()
    (CVE-2023-2194)

  • kernel: tls: race condition in do_tls_getsockopt may lead to
    use-after-free or NULL pointer dereference (CVE-2023-28466)

For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS
score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE
page(s) listed in the References section.

Bug Fix(es):

  • [RT] Single Node Openshift cluster becomes unreachable after running less
    than 2 hours (BZ#2186853)

  • kernel-rt: update RT source tree to the latest RHEL-9.2.z1 Batch
    (BZ#2188313)

  1. Solution:

For details on how to apply this update, which includes the changes
described in this advisory, refer to:

https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258

The system must be rebooted for this update to take effect.

  1. Bugs fixed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/):

2179000 - CVE-2023-28466 kernel: tls: race condition in do_tls_getsockopt may lead to use-after-free or NULL pointer dereference
2187308 - CVE-2023-2002 Kernel: bluetooth: Unauthorized management command execution
2187439 - CVE-2023-2124 kernel: OOB access in the Linux kernel’s XFS subsystem
2188396 - CVE-2023-2194 kernel: i2c: out-of-bounds write in xgene_slimpro_i2c_xfer()
2192589 - CVE-2023-2235 kernel: use-after-free vulnerability in the perf_group_detach function of the Linux Kernel Performance Events
2196105 - CVE-2023-32233 kernel: netfilter: use-after-free in nf_tables when processing batch requests can lead to privilege escalation

CVE-2023-33953: Security Bulletins

gRPC contains a vulnerability that allows hpack table accounting errors could lead to unwanted disconnects between clients and servers in exceptional cases/ Three vectors were found that allow the following DOS attacks: - Unbounded memory buffering in the HPACK parser - Unbounded CPU consumption in the HPACK parser The unbounded CPU consumption is down to a copy that occurred per-input-block in the parser, and because that could be unbounded due to the memory copy bug we end up with an O(n^2) parsing loop, with n selected by the client. The unbounded memory buffering bugs: - The header size limit check was behind the string reading code, so we needed to first buffer up to a 4 gigabyte string before rejecting it as longer than 8 or 16kb. - HPACK varints have an encoding quirk whereby an infinite number of 0’s can be added at the start of an integer. gRPC’s hpack parser needed to read all of them before concluding a parse. - gRPC’s metadata overflow check was performed per frame, so ...

CVE-2023-2235

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux Kernel Performance Events system can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation. The perf_group_detach function did not check the event's siblings' attach_state before calling add_event_to_groups(), but remove_on_exec made it possible to call list_del_event() on before detaching from their group, making it possible to use a dangling pointer causing a use-after-free vulnerability. We recommend upgrading past commit fd0815f632c24878e325821943edccc7fde947a2.

CVE-2023-2194: Invalid Bug ID

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's SLIMpro I2C device driver. The userspace "data->block[0]" variable was not capped to a number between 0-255 and was used as the size of a memcpy, possibly writing beyond the end of dma_buffer. This flaw could allow a local privileged user to crash the system or potentially achieve code execution.

Ubuntu Security Notice 6033-1 - It was discovered that the Traffic-Control Index implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly perform filter deactivation in some situations. A local attacker could possibly use this to gain elevated privileges. Please note that with the fix for thisCVE, kernel support for the TCINDEX classifier has been removed. William Zhao discovered that the Traffic Control subsystem in the Linux kernel did not properly handle network packet retransmission in certain situations. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service.

CVE-2023-28466

do_tls_getsockopt in net/tls/tls_main.c in the Linux kernel through 6.2.6 lacks a lock_sock call, leading to a race condition (with a resultant use-after-free or NULL pointer dereference).
